That Warm Fuzzy Feeling | San Diego Photographer

Where did it all begin? The photos, the art, the obsession with color. Well, I have a confession. It’s a small confession, but a confession nonetheless.

While growing up in high school, my dad started going through this phase. He thought he was Chevy Chase for a few years there, and our family vacation always brought us to Las Vegas. Fun, for the pool and food. Not fun to hang out in the hotel room at night, while they went out to play keno. But, it’s not like I could go out anyways! I was still in my teens! I still felt trapped, but we were treated with room service and a movie. Yes, my parents are wiiild and crazy and choose keno as their game of choice.  One night, while watching my then, very little sister (she was so little!), we decided to get a movie ordered the room. The movie? Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Outcome?

It changed my life forever.

Yes, it’s that dramatic!

No really, it is.

It was the longest movie ever, and I didn’t actually finish it that night. I tried really, really hard. But, 2am came around and I literally couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore. But, I was hooked. They made it for me!:)  I loved the special effects, the costumes, the colors, everything was so thought out and perfect.

I’d find out later, that the props were all custom made for the films from the mugs at the Hobbits local pub, to the mithril they wore in the battle scenes. The characters lived in New Zealand for the entirety of the three films, I just loved the entire project.

The only flaw I found was that nice old man died. Why would you ruin a perfectly good movie by ending the part of the grandpa/grandma character, or any kind of animal?

On a side note – I just can’t watch movies where any animal dies. Just can’t.  I’d come to find out later, that the story of that ‘old man’ didn’t end there.

Oh, I was so relieved.

I fell in love with visual effects. The way some colors could create a mood in a scene, lighting could create a ‘bad guy’ or a love scene. Ever notice that all romantic comedies are super bright and somewhat orange and fuzzy? They create that warm happy, light feeling. (Example A: How to lose a guy in 10 days). Comic-book type movies are bright and saturated, like, well, a comic book. Sad/action and serious movies are dark with a greenish hue or muted colors (think Fight Club). But, back to that fuzzy warm happy feeling!  I had to be a part of it. I loved the technical side that had the power to create the emotional side and feeling.

I knew it was for me, I just had to find out exactly what ‘it’ was. And so began my transformation that showed me where I belong…
