Difference in the details and Save for Web | San Diego Photographer

A while back, while I was editing a recent engagement session, and working on the last couple images I was excited to post the images and share them with everyone.  I had one image I loved and I was just posting it to my blog.

I posted, and went to check that everything was in the right order and posted correctly, and right away there was something wrong.

The color, sharpness, and hue of the images were completely off. I couldn’t understand it. I sharpen for web as usual, and re-size and post. But, my couple was blue! Much less, there were fuzzy and blue with a purple touch. Pretty colors for anything other than people. But when I looked in PS the images were perfect, there was a clear difference between my files on my computer and the images on my blog.

So I started researching what it could  be.

So many sites told me to make sure I was sharpening and re-sizing. Well, I had that down and that wasn’t an issue. Others said I needed to change the service I was uploading them from, so I changed from photobucket to flickr.

Yeah, nothing changed. It was something that was happening between me and the web specifically. So I started a new plan. I emailed every single photographer I followed and could think of.

I even emailed Jasmine Star.

And?

Yes, she wrote back!

After just meeting her last week at WPPI, I can honestly say she is one of the nicest people in the industry. Completely real and straight forward. I loved her. Ok, back to the topic at hand…

They all had different answers. But a few of them led me back to one thing.

There was one in particular that I took advice from. Laura Ferriera had said a few weeks prior (she’s a photographer, yes – but she’s more of an artist than anything) to use save for web. Her images are amazing. Just look at her portfolio, click on the picture of the man with the guitar. I had found her due to a suggestion of a friend to an artist’s website. It was amazing, and a big part of what made me want to become a photographer.

She said to make sure I was ‘saving for web’. I had emailed her asking any advice she could offer in how her images were so crisp and vibrant, without being muddy. She suggested to make sure I was saving for web? At the time, I didn’t know what she meant, and I ran through the ‘save for web’ process and didn’t understand it, so I went ahead editing without it. But, with this new inquiry and array of answers I was getting back from everyone, I found that a few of them did use the save for web process. I returned to her email and started researching what I had to do in the process and found it.

I finally got my answer, and was able to get the richness and crisp bright photos I wanted. Oh, it was such a relief! I felt like I had the control and confidence back in my images.

I wish there had been somewhere I could go rather then emailing so many people. So I thought I’d do a little post in case anyone else had ever run into this problem.

First off, I’m no expert. I just know these steps since they work for me, and that’s it!:)While I’m not going to post the step by step process of save for web, feel free to email me and I’ll give you the step-by-step of what to do to. It’s just too much to post here, since I post the literal step by step of everything so there’s no confusion ( i.e  ‘click ok, then scroll to scroll bar, scroll down – yes step  by  step!).

Here’s an example of what my image would have looked like without the save for web, and what they look like with it.

WITHOUT save for web. (below)

Notice the desaturation in the skin. The warmth is gone, and the couple looks flat and lifeless (literally).

WITH save for web (below)

This is how it looks in PS, full of life and color…

The life is back in their skin, the warmth and saturation in their skin tone, and the colors in the background have their vibrancy back.

And another, with a different look…

WITHOUT save for web

WITH save for web

I hope this helps a bit, I know it would have helped me A TON a long time ago.

Happy Saturday!
